Snapshot

Knitting is a fabric manufacturing process in which yarn loops are intermeshed to form a fabric. Knitting is the most common method of inter-looping and is second only to weaving as a method of manufacturing textile products. The conversion of yarn into loops can be done either in a horizontal direction or in a vertical direction. Therefore, two types of knitting trades have been developed, the fabric built up in horizontal direction is called weft-knitting, while the fabric built up in vertical direction is called warp-knitting.

Weft knitting is the most common types used by the manufacturer to produce textile knitted products such as Shirts and Socks. In terms of color patterning, weft knit may be knitted with multiple yarns to produce interesting pattern design. There are few types or technique to produce weft knit structure, Single jersey, Purl, and Rib are some of the technique that been used to produce weft knitted structure. Warp knitted is produced from a set of warp yarn. It is parallelly knitted to each other down the length of the fabric. Since knitted fabric may have hundreds of wales, warp knitting is typically done by machine.

Stitch is the most important structural element of knitted fabrics. The most common are plain stitch, miss-stitch and tuck stitch. Vertical columns of stitches in a knitted fabric are called wales. Horizontal rows of stitches are called courses.

Knitting may be done by hand or by using a machine. Different types of yarns (fiber type, texture, and twist), needle sizes, and stitch types may be used to achieve knitted fabrics with different properties (color, texture, weight, heat retention, look, water resistance, and/or integrity). The tendency of knits to resist wrinkling is an important factor to boost up their popularity. Knitted fabrics are used for designing active clothing such as sports clothing. Their elastic nature permits for abundant physical activity.

Yarn for hand-knitting is usually sold as balls or skeins (hanks), and it may also be wound on spools or cones. Skeins and balls are generally sold with a yarn-band, a label that describes the yarn's weight, length, dye lot, fiber content, washing instructions, suggested needle size, likely gauge/tension, etc.
